Geoff Pikey 12:14 - fair comment based on those figures which I find genuinely astonishing. The idea that this country has far more regular tennis players than rugby or cricket players seems completely counter intuitive based on simply being out and about, plus my own kids experience at school. Fuck knows where all these woofters are playing, but clearly there are an awful lot of hidden tennis courts in the UK.

Cricket is played with passion by the entire former British Empire, including India which alone is about a billion people.
Tennis is played at lunch by upper class women, a handful of Oxbridge/Ivy League fitness freaks who are too fragile for rugby/polo, and the French/Spanish. Absolutely no one else.

Isner v Mahut (Wimbledon 2010) involved 980 POINTS won/lost, god knows how many shots (I don't think it's even documented), and the match lasted 11 fucking HOURS! As well as each running many more miles than the average footballer (though the back and forth strain is more crucial than actual total distance, which is half of a footballer in an average game ).
An exceptional tennis game, true, but I'd like to see any golfer do that. Or even a 100th of that. Doesn't compare.
An 11 hour snooker game mostly involves... sitting in a CHAIR! An 11 hour cricket game? Mostly standing still or watching.
Isner, who won that tennis match, played the NEXT DAY in the second round. Understandably shattered, Isner lost, and vowed to take a break from tennis... for "four or five days".
Fucking poof. Andy Carroll would never be such a wuss, would he?

English tennis is of course an utter abortion.
The most lucrative tournament in the world and all it's done is promote it as an upper class hit about.
There hasn't been an English player since Fred Perry and he was snubbed by Wimbledon because he wasn't the right class
Understand when he won Wimbledon one year the officials didn't even congratulate him but came in to the dressing room to say Jolly bad luck old chum to his opponent.

You are right, tennis club membership is cheap. However, your conclusion is fatally flawed - the courts at popular times are monopolised by middle-class, middle-aged social players playing mixed doubles.
If you doubt this is true, I suggest you look at Britain's 'elite' men's performances for the past 80 years. The ONLY exception to the list of unrelenting dross and failure is Andy Murray: and his mother had to remove him from the British system and ship him off to Spain.

Find your points rather spurious, neilalex.
In sports participation (weekly) of 16+ yrs (only figs I can find from Sport England), Tennis is played twice-plus more than rugby (both disciplines), cricket, boxing, rowing/sailing etc.
It's only behind swimming, athletics, football and golf... though guess how many of those are "serious"
Would you sniff at England cricketers or rugby players, for example, being best in the world (as if) because they're minority sports and there's "little competition"?
Given he's also from Scotland (hardly prime for tennis, day-in day-out as a child), Murray's achievements are superb.
As of NOW, he's clearly the UK's top-achieving sportsperson. it's blindingly obvious.
